Lots of the telephone poles are not sunk into the ground, presumably because there’s very little dirt to sink into before you hit solid rock. Many of the poles are, instead, set in a box of rocks. The box is probably about 5 feet square and 3 or 4 feet deep. You can’t see the bottom of the box in the picture below.

The standard style of old houses here is a two-story with a central front door and a very slightly pitched roof.
