This is Tom, writing on Friday, Juneteenth. Since the days tend to blur when we don’t write on the day we travel, this may be somewhat abbreviated in recollection and content.
After our successful SCREECH IN party the previous night and a late bedtime for all, we managed to organize ourselves pretty well for our departure from Heart’s Delight on the way to Bonavista. We had to travel south to pick up the TCH (Trans Canada Highway) as we left the Avalon Peninsula and skirted Trinity Bay to go north on the Bonavista Peninsula to Bonavista, where Giovanni Caboto, aka John Cabot, landed in 1497. He proclaimed the view from the new found land “Beautiful.” He was a Venetian employed by England; present day Italy was separate principalities at that time. Funny we Yanks were rarely taught his nationality in history class.
Although the weather this far was pretty gorgeous, this trip was a rainy one from start to finish with long hours in the car. We did stop in Port Rexton and were challenged by a warren of backroads to arrive for lunch at “OH MY CHEESES” where we enjoyed poutine and cheese sandwiches with beers from the Port Rexton Brewery.
Back in the car, some snoozed and others spent time on their phones as the weather provided few opportunities for sightseeing except for trees, rocks, and cliffs. Jim gets kudos for his long hours of driving while we mostly vegged as he dodged traffic and the ever present potholes.
Having had little trouble navigating in St. Johns, we were unprepared for the tangle of roads in Bonavista. Our guidebook said, ” Bonavista, while small, can be tricky to navigate.” That was certainly correct. To add to the confusion, the directions to our abodes (two separate houses) were not entirely clear, but we eventually arrived, thankful to be out of the car to find, WOOHOO, two bathrooms in the house shared by Val, Dan, Tom and Deb! The connection to the WB Sooley House in Heart’s Delight was linked by portraits of Queen Victoria and the Royal family prominently displayed in both houses.
We had a lovely dinner at Mifflin’s Tea Room and were glad to finally be horizontal in comfy beds.
