Sunday, June 21 – Summer!

Jim

We checked out of the Coastal Inn, repacked the car, and headed out for River Bourgeois, where Diane’s grandmother, Henrietta (Nita) Macneil lived. We stopped at the local church where Diane and Tom searched the cemetery for related Macneils but to no avail. River Bourgeois is a lovely little town and we enjoyed the side trip. From there we drove back down to the bottom of Bra d’Or lake and up the other side to Baddeck where we had lunch (eating again!) at the Highwheelers which specialized in “hefty” sandwiches. After lunch we visited the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site and learned all about the life of this amazing person. (Diane’s father Malcolm once had a ride on Bell’s boat with Malcom’s grandfather, Malcolm Jeremiah Thomas Macneil, from River Bourgeois, who was the inspector of schools for Cape Breton. At least, that’s what Malcolm said.) We had dinner at The Freight Shed which turned out to be our best meal on the trip. A really fine restaurant, and our waiter Jeff assured us we were his best table of the night.
