Monday, June 22

Today is the day we drive the Cabot Trail. We departed about 9:30 and started up the east side of Cape Breton. Thankfully it is a beautiful day which really enhances the spectacular views along the way.

We spent a fair bit of time going up to Meat Cove because Skip remembered being there before and watching an eagle fly from one cliff to another. Maybe this picture above shows the spot, but nothing is certain. These days, some campground covers all the space and has signs saying you can’t park there unless you’re a paying camper. The road ran out completely just past this spot, so we turned around and drove slowly to get a quick look.

In the afternoon, we did the western shore, which doesn’t have quite so many dramatic cliffs as the east. But there’s also a section where you’re right at the bottom in amongst a bunch of mountains that come right down to the edge of the road–nothing but dense shades of green on either side of you.

It was lovely but nowhere near as scary as I remember it being when I was a kid. I think all the guard rails might have been new, but I suppose that shouldn’t be a surprise in more than 60 years.

Our last night was in a B&B in Port Hood {in the Macneil House!). It was a lovely old, rambling house with beautiful linens on all the beds. Lugging all our baggage down on Tuesday was a lot easier for weary travelers than getting all of it up to the third floor. All that’s left is flying home.

We had a beautiful sunset as we sat on the front porch of the Macneil house.
